Was Apple Really Selling Bricked Phones?

Was Apple Really Selling Bricked Phones?

Australian users have a bit of a DIY mentality – like New Zealanders they can’t see the point of paying a fortune for something that they can get a mate to fix cheaper.  Normally they would only take it in to Apple if the problem cannot be fixed with masking tape and number eight fencing wire.  Apple has a huge problem with this. It makes a fortune charging fees to have its spotty blue shirts repairing things that most uses could fix with a screwdriver and WD40. According to the Australian...

Samsung Pleased As Galaxy S8 Pre-orders Surpass S7 Launch

Pre-orders for Samsung Electronics Co Ltd’s flagship Galaxy S8 smartphone have surpassed those of its predecessor S7, the firm’s mobile chief said on Thursday, which suggests many consumers are undeterred by last year’s Galaxy Note 7 fires. Strong initial demand for the S8 will be encouraging for a firm recovering from one of the worst product safety failures in tech history, which ended in the Note 7’s swift withdrawal. The new smartphone has received favorable reviews...

Are Smartphones On The Way Out?

Are Smartphones On The Way Out?

This is not an extremely late April 1st, and we admit that it is a little early given that its replacement has not shown up yet, but we predict that it will go the way of the dodo, the Norwegian Blue, the bleeper and the Crackberry. OK it is probably a few years off, but the technology is so persuasive that its death will be longer than the exit of a hero in a South American soap opera. For a while now smartphone sales have slowed. Basically the structure developed by Nokia and stolen by Apple...

FCC Won’t Support Move To All In-flight Mobile Calls

The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission has announced that he is proposing to pull the plug on a 2013 regulatory proceeding that had sought to lift the ban on mobile phones on U.S. airlines. The FCC said in 2013 that it would consider allowing air travelers to make mobile phone calls but never finalized it. “I stand with airline pilots, flight attendants, and America’s flying public against the FCC’s ill-conceived 2013 plan to allow people to make cellphone calls on planes. I...

Scammers Trick iPhone Users Into Paying To Fix Non-existent Problem

Apple has fixed a bug in the iOS version of Safari that had been used by criminals to trick phone owners into paying $125 or more because they assumed the browser was broken. The flaw, fixed in Monday’s iOS 10.3 update, had been reported to Apple a month ago by researchers at San Francisco-based mobile security firm Lookout. “One of our users alerted us to this campaign, and said he had lost control of Safari on his iPhone,” Andrew Blaich, a Lookout security researcher, said in...

Tech giant Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has announced that it plans to offer refurbished versions of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, the model pulled from markets last year due to fire-prone batteries. Samsung’s Note 7s were permanently scrapped in October following a global recall, roughly two months from the launch of the near-$900 devices, after some phones self-combusted. The same GigabitLTE Snapdragon X16 modem is now part of the Snapdragon 835 – a 10nm SoC that is about to debut in a dozen high end phones.
