Verizon Remains Uncertain On Carrying The PlayBook

Verizon Wireless is still evaluating whether or not it will carry the PlayBook tablet computer from Research In Motion, the biggest U.S. mobile operator stated on Wednesday.

While BlackBerry maker RIM had said it expected Verizon Wireless to be one of its distribution partners for PlayBook, the company said it has yet to make such a determination.

“We’re still evaluating the BlackBerry Playbook and have not made a determination as to whether we’re going to distribute it,” Verizon Wireless Spokeswoman Brenda Raney said.

The comment came the day after PlayBook debuted at North American electronics retailers.

If Verizon does decide not to sell the PlayBook, it could deter current BlackBerry mobile phone users on Verizon’s network (the largest wireless carrier in the US) from buying the tablet, since loyal RIM customers are thought to be one of the biggest target consumer bases.

However, it is still too early to tell whether a wireless network supported PlayBook would attract more buyers than the wifi-only version, which recently made its debut in retail stores across the US and Canada.

Wireless versions of the PlayBook should be available to consumers this summer in either June or July.
