Can Console gaming be replaced by Smartphone’s?
ISupply is reporting that Smartphone’s with the ability to play games will outnumber dedicated gaming consoles like the XBOX 360 and PS3 very soon. As a result, the video game industry is now starting to focus more attention on developing games for this market as a way to increase revenues; as the install base continues to grow by leaps and bounds. While small video game developers can probably make a profit off simple titles that cost less than $8.00. Established powerhouse developers like EA, Activision and Ubisoft will continue to make the majority of their profits from consoles and sell Smartphone games as a way to lure more consumers to consoles.
As a true gamer at heart a mobile device will never be able to compete with a dedicated console such as the XBOX 360. Sure the Smartphone’s can play scaled down versions of the top video games and are great for simple puzzle games. Smartphone’s at this time cannot match console gaming in the areas of depth, ease of use, visualization and online play. Furthermore, most online gamers will not play true games unless there is a controller attached which Smartphones have yet to incorporate.
