Nvidia Debuts Project Holodeck VR

Taking a short pause from GPU spec talk, Nvidia on Tuesday unveiled a live demo of its new Project Holodeck VR tech at Computex in Taiwan, Taipei. It’s a virtual world, created through HTC’s Vive headset, that allows users to experience the perks of the physical world — manipulate physical objects! obey the laws of physics! — but in a completely digital space. Silicon Valley Tech Giants Ask NSA To Change Spying Tactics

That’s the section that allows the National Security Agency to gather web data of citizens outside of the US — and in some cases, against Americans. Section 702 was first revealed...

Does The Nintendo Switch Represent The Future Of Consoles?

It’s a fact often stated, but no less true for the repetition, that videogames as a whole owe a great deal to Nintendo. Time and again over the past 30-odd years, Nintendo has defined and redefined core parts of what a game, or a games console, is meant to be. It hasn’t always been the first to invent an idea, but so often it has been the first company to take a rough idea and turn it into something so accessible, so useful and so necessary that, in hindsight, it ends up feeling obvious. The...

Is Intel Getting Its Motherboard Partners To Bundle Optane

Intel is leaning on its motherboard chums to bundle Optane on motherboards much like MSI did. Apparently motherboard makers are not that happy with the idea because it pushes up the price and Optane is not exactly a killer bit of kit that everyone wants. Intel wants Optane memory on boards with 200 series chipsets such as Z270. The idea is that will stimulate demand for Kaby Lake. According to Guru 3D retailers think this is pointless as the next-generation Coffee Lake is set to become available...

Do Astronomers Use The Same Process To Search For Alien Life

Human civilizations dating back thousands of years left behind structures and records documenting their studies of the stars as they sought to chart the seasons, help travelers find their way and interpret the world around them. Stargazers among the ancient Greeks, Maya, Egyptians, Middle Easterners and Asians likely also pondered if there were other planets like ours among those distant points of light — and if so, what might live there. Over the last century, science-fiction storytellers have...

Do Dust Clouds Form Around Black Holes During Galaxy Collisions

When galaxies collide, massive amounts of gas and dust create a cocoon of debris around the ravenous black hole at the center of the merger, a new study shows.  Using NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), astronomers studied several merging galaxies to show that such large-scale interactions can greatly disrupt material orbiting in the vicinity, ultimately accelerating the rate at which the material falls in toward the center of the black hole and creating what is known as...
