Is Wearable Market In The U.S. Slowing?

The market for wearable devices including smartwatches and fitness trackers in the US is progressing along at a rather slow pace of just 25 percent year-over-year, according to the latest industry estimates. The folks at eMarketer published an updated forecast this month revising their estimates of wearable device users in the US, saying the market will only grow 24.7 percent in 2016 as usage continues to be limited to early adopters. In October 2015, the market research company estimated that 63.7...

Will Apple’s A11 SoC Start Production In April?

The folks at Boston-based BlueFin Research Partners have recently given some much-needed commentary on the state of 10nm chip production at TSMC for Apple’s next-generation iPhone units. For the past three years, production of TSMC’s leading-edge process nodes  – 20nm, 16nm and 16FF+ –  has always ramped up following orders of a new iPhone SoC – the Apple A8, A9 and A10. In 2017, it appears this will not be the case as the researchers claim that TSMC’s 10nm yields are currently...

Will Twitter Be Around For All Of 2017?

It has taken a while, but we are finally getting analysts to describe situations in the way we do. Trip Chowdhry, the managing director of equity research at Global Equities Research shocked the market when he described Twitter as being “toast.” We would have liked it better had he added Twitter was now the Norwegian Blue of the tech world but we can’t have everything. Chowdhry’s comment followed chief technology officer, Adam Messinger, tweeted that he would leave the company and...

Alien Megastructure Puzzling To Astronomers

Astronomers may have to think a little harder to solve the mystery of Boyajian’s star. In September 2015, Yale University’s Tabetha Boyajian and her colleagues reported that the star KIC 8462852 has dimmed dramatically multiple times over the past seven years, once by an astounding 22 percent.  NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler space telescope spotted these dimming events. But the brightness dips of “Boyajian’s star,” as it has come to be known, were far too significant...

Do The Apple Airbuds Have a Design Flaw?

Do The Apple Airbuds Have a Design Flaw?

Apple’s overpriced Airbuds might have shipped before Christmas after all but they are proving to be a disaster for users and the environment. Users have been complaining that the design of the earbuds – like two tiny devices hanging from your ear, do not appear to sit well in the human ear, which was what most Apple fanboys were equipped with. As a result, they tend to fall out, which means either finding them, or shelling out a lot of dosh to get a replacement. The Tame Apple Press has been...

Is MediTek Facing Supply Issues?

A recent report from Chinese-based Economic Daily News claimed that MediaTek would be slashing orders for its upcoming ten-core, 10-nanometer chips by at least 50 percent.  Now, the company has publicly dismissed the rumor, saying it was not the source. The report originally claimed that MediaTek had revised its 10nm chip outlook for 2017, which would affect its overall competitiveness with TSMC’s other customers including Apple, Hisilicon and Spreadtrum. The company’s upcoming deca-core Helio...

ATT Introduces A Call Protect App For Mobile Devices

Last week, AT&T introduced a new smartphone app called Call Protect that it claims will warn subscribers before answering their phones if an incoming call could be a spam dialer. The mobile application works by applying network-level monitoring and blocking of known spam calls using the company’s voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) network data capabilities. Since the network is IP-based, it resembles a traditional email spam filter by analyzing incoming calls and labeling them as spam. Second, the app...

Did Betelgeuse Cannibalize Other Stars?

Did Betelgeuse Cannibalize Other Stars?

The huge, red star Betelgeuse, which marks the hunter’s shoulder in the constellation Orion, may have swallowed up a companion star not long ago, a new study suggests. Betelgeuse is a “red supergiant” that will soon die in a supernova explosion. As the name of its stellar class indicates, Betelgeuse has bloated immensely as the end of its life has neared. Although Betelgeuse’s mass is just 15 to 25 times that of the sun, the star is currently about 860 million miles (1.4 billion...

Honda, Waymo May Team Up For Self-driving Vehicles

Honda Motor Co Ltd confirmed that it is in talks to supply vehicles for Alphabet Inc’s Waymo to test self-driving technology, in the latest instance of a automaker collaborating with a tech firm to supplement its own automation efforts. The talks, which come just one week after Waymo became an independent company, could see Honda become the tech firm’s second partner after Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV agreed in May to add the technology to its minivans. The moves illustrate how carmakers,...

Can Astronomers Find Exoplanets That Look Like Earth?

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but when it’s the first ever image of an Earth-like exoplanet, a picture could be worth far more. That’s our goal at Project Blue. Ten years ago, scientists didn’t know if Earth-like planets were common in this galaxy. “Earth-like” means planets that are made of rock (rather than being gas giants) and orbit their stars in the “Goldilocks zone”, where it’s the right temperature for liquid water to exist...
