Should “Core Gaming” Feel Threatened?

Fans of traditional, “core” games are often extremely hostile towards the new wave of casual and mobile titles, and even towards the people who play them. They’re keen to draw a line in the sand between these titles and “real” games and quick to portray players of Farmville, Candy Crush Saga or Puzzle & Dragons as mindless consumers of low-grade, repetitive entertainment that’s utterly disconnected from and disrespectful of gaming culture and the medium’s...

Will Nokia Make A Deal With Alcatel?

Nokia is trying to work out if it should approach French rival Alcatel-Lucent about a tie-up. The outfit is trying to think how it can grow after the planned sale of its handset business to Microsoft. While no formal talks are underway with Alcatel-Lucent, Reuters claimed that Nokia held “on again, off again” discussions about buying Alcatel’s wireless business as recently as late 2012 and that the two companies could still come back to the table. Both companies have struggled to...

AMD’s Tahiti Is Going Down

Not everyone can afford the latest GPU, and even a lot of people who can simply don’t want to. Are Game Developers Fleeing The Mobile Space?

The mobile and tablet market has grown tremendously in the last several years. The number of apps on Apple’s App Store and Google Play is downright mind boggling, and if you’re an app developer… well, best of luck to you. Nearly half of the app developers surveyed made no profit at all. So the question has to be asked: after years of...

Will Earthlings Be Able To Come Home From Mars If They Get Sick?

Landing astronauts on Mars is a tall order, but bringing them back to Earth promises to be even trickier — especially if Red Planet explorers get the sniffles on the long flight home. Sick astronauts could conceivably have been infected on Mars, some parts of which may be capable of supporting life as we know it. So the world may be reluctant to welcome such travelers home, leery of possibly unleashing an extraterrestrial superplague on Earth’s 7 billion people. NASA is already thinking about...
