LG Will Offer Curved Screen OLED TV For $13,500 In May

LG Electronics has started taking pre-orders for its 55-inch curved OLED TV in South Korea, with deliveries to begin next month. Are Facebook Members Leaving En-Mass?

Facebook has to deal with a mass exodus of users who are no longer interested in giving up all their personal data so that they can be inundated with pictures of cute cats, conspiracy theories and US gun lobby propaganda. While the company is expected to report that its revenues are up, it might also have to tell shareholders that its expansion in the US, UK and other major European countries has peaked. In the last month, the world’s largest social network has lost 6 million US visitors,...

London-based Informa didn’t respond to a request for comment. Wireless carriers have noticed the trend to using chat apps for a while, and analyst firms started reporting the tipping point in favor of chat apps at the start of 2013. Is Time Really An Illusion?

Is Time Really An Illusion?

Is time real, or the ultimate illusion? Most physicists would say the latter, but Lee Smolin challenges this orthodoxy in his new book, “Time Reborn” (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, April 2013), which he discussed here Wednesday (April 24) at the Rubin Museum of Art. In a conversation with Duke University neuroscientist Warren Meck, theoretical physicist Smolin, who’s based at Canada’s Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, argued for the controversial idea that time is...

Will Zynga’s Turnaround Be Successful?

Will Zynga’s Turnaround Be Successful?

Nobody expected Zynga’s results for this quarter to be great, so nobody was exactly surprised when the company announced a decline in almost every number that matters. It turned a small profit, but that’s a bright spot in an otherwise deeply unimpressive set of results. The really important figures – the number of people playing and, crucially, the number of people paying – are all down. Zynga’s business may not be hemorrhaging money, but it’s losing audience,...

Samsung Snatches More Mobile Phone Market Share From Apple

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd snatched more smartphone market share from its biggest rival, Apple Inc in the latest quarter, with sales of its phones surging to account for one third of the global market. Sales of the iPhone 5 helped Apple’s volumes grow 6.6 percent to 37.4 million phones in the quarter from a year earlier, but that was not enough to stop its share of the market dropping to 17.3 percent from 23 percent, research firm IDC said. A flood of cheaper Android-powered devices from...

IBM CEO Blames Workers For Bad Quarter

IBM’s CEO Virginia Rometty has taken to her web cam to blast her be-suited staff who are “too slow.” Rometty sent off a five-minute internal video message which was so grumpy they did her the favour of sending it to the Wall Street Journal. She moaned at the company’s sales staff for failing to get ink on the page for a number of potential deals. “As the quarter ended, hundreds of millions of dollars of software and mainframe opportunities, they didn’t close and...

Is Amazon Gearing Up To Offer A Set-Top TV Box?

After conquering the low end of the tablet market with the Kindle Fire, Amazon may be preparing to invade the living room with a television set-top box. Citing three unnamed sources, Bloomberg Businessweek reports that Amazon is planning to launch the set-top box this fall. However, the report doesn’t say how much the box will cost or how it will stand out from other devices like Apple TV and Roku. It’s obvious why Amazon would want to launch its own TV box. Existing set-top boxes and...

T-Mobile To Clarify Its ‘Uncarrier’ Service Plans

T-Mobile USA’s “radical” service plans promising no annual contracts aren’t quite as radical as customers might believe them to be, and the mobile carrier will change its advertising and offer refunds in a settlement with the state of Washington. On March 26, the fourth-largest U.S. carrier introduced a series of new service offerings, including no-contract monthly plans and a program that let customers pay for a new phone over the course of 24 months. In unveiling the plans,...
